...THE 2001/2002 PACK WINNERS WERE...!

Following were the winners of the Pack 198 Finals:

First Place, with a time of 2.559: Joe K.
Second Place, with a time of 2.567: Alec P.
Third Place, with a time of 2.580: Tyler S.
The following finalists also did very well; you might even notice that only 55 thousanths of a second separated the 1st place from the 9th place finishers:
Fourth Place, with a time of 2.581: Brett R.
Fifth Place (tie), with times of 2.594: Chris C. and Matt C.
Seventh Place, with a time of 2.599: Colin R.
Eighth Place, with a time of 2.612: Eric K.
Ninth Place, with a time of 2.614: John H.

This is one of the most exciting meetings of the year – something just about everybody, Cubs and adults alike, look forward to.  The spirit of competition thrives, and the boys have a blast.

With that in mind, the Pack would like to speed a few things your way in regard to the cars and races.  Of course, building these cars can be a daunting task for the boys, so the parents often help out as much as we can, but we should all be careful to make sure that we don’t help out too much; after all, this is for the boys, right?

Chippewa District Derby Rules (we will also use these...)

Axles, wheels and body shall be from the materials provided in the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit #17006.  Use of pre-assembled or customized kits is strictly not allowed and will result in disqualification.

Use of cars raced from previous years will not be allowed, and must be of original design.  Also the cars cannot be altered in any way after your Pack race, except to add lubrication.

Racers must stay for the entire race and will not be given back their cars until the end of the race.  Leaving early for whatever reason shows poor sportsmanship and causes difficulties in scoring the race.

Overall width shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches including wheels.  Overall length shall not exceed 7 inches including wheels.  Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.  Ground Clearance shall be a minimum of 3/8 inches.

Wheels cannot be modified in any manner, shape or form, except to lightly sand off burrs from the sides and bottoms of wheels.

The wheels will not be angled in any way so that they ride on the edges.  The wheels will sit flatly on the track.

Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are not allowed.

The car shall not ride on any type of spring.  The car must be freewheeling with no starting devices.  No loose materials of any kind are allowed on or in the car.

Cars cannot be handled, nor can lubrication be added after the car has been checked in.

For inspection purposes hubcaps will not be allowed.

Any car that violates the above rules or does not meet the above specifications will be disqualified and not be allowed to race.  All cars are subject to inspection at check in and possibly at the end of the race.  All decisions by the judges are final.

These specifications and rules are to ensure that everyone who races is on an even and fair racing level.  We hope that everyone understands this and co-operates, so the boys can have an enjoyable experience racing the cars that they helped build.  We also strongly encourage individual packs to adopt these rules for their Pack Races, and not to vary from these, so there are no disappointed faces on race day.

Obviously, any adult entries are not subject to the above rules, since they aren’t eligible for the District Race.  However, as you help your Cub build his car, be sure to keep these rules and specifications in mind; if he is one of our top winners or alternates, we want to make sure that he is not disappointed when he represents Pack 198 at District!

Cub Information

There will be racing for each level in the Pack, as well as a “run-off” between the top winners in each of these levels for the Pack finalists.  Out of the final races, the top three winners will be eligible to compete in the Chippewa District races. We will also select the fourth and fifth place finalists from the Pack as alternates for the District races.  It is important that, when building these cars for our Pack races, they meet all the requirements of the Chippewa District rules displayed above...

Of course, the most important rule for the races is that we all have a great time – remember…everyone is a winner!

Adult Information

OK, we're gonna give this another shot this year - we know that there are some frustrated wanna-be derby builders out there, so we plan on having a special division for adult entries.  This way, you can display your skills at building that hot rod you’ve got in you, while your Cub can build theirs as well.  These cars will be judged for their looks, but racing may not be run in this division due to time constraints.  You will also have to purchase your own car, but you have the choice of whatever “official” kit you want to use (there are other derbies run by various organizations out there…).  Your car should still attempt to match the rules for the event, in the spirit of the Derby.  Otherwise, have fun with whatever radical looks (or whatever) you are interested in creating!
